I investigated ASPCA® lists to find whether Hoya plants are poisonous to dogs or not. The three following Hoya species are mentioned as non-toxic plants for dogs (and also cats and horses) in ASPCA:

  • Hoya carnosa (Honey Plant or Wax Plant) including Hoya carnosa ‘krinkle kurl’  (Hindu Rope Plant, Porcelain Flower
  • Hoya publcalyx (Silver Pink Vine plant)
  • Hoya kerrii (Sweetheart Hoya, wax hearts, or valentine hoya)

Hoya kerrii is non-toxic plant for dogs

Conclusion

Are Hoya Plants Toxic to Dogs? There are over 500 accepted species in the Hoya genus. Some of them are used as tropical vining houseplants. that only the three above species have been investigated for toxicity to dogs.

Please keep in mind every species may contain specific chemical metabolites. So, when a specific Hoya species (such as Hoya kerrii ) is known as a safe plant for dogs, another species may be toxic.
