Before starting to make an indoor herb garden you must think about where to put it. Light is the critical factor that determines the best place for your indoor garden. Hence, you must first find a bright place with indirect sunlight in your house, it is perfect for most indoor herbs.

Without natural light, you can still have your indoor herb garden, how? Grow lights make it possible for you. I discussed the best cheap growing light for seedlings in my other post.

After you determine the place of your indoor herb garden, look at there, what do you see? A windowsill, a blank wall, or a table? And now, it’s time to choose one of the following ideas for your indoor herb garden.

Save your Space with a Hanging Herb Garden

I don’t have a large apartment, so, I always think of utilizing vertical spaces. I found the hanging herb pots, a great option to solve my problem. If you have a limited floor like me, you can see the top ideas for making a hanging planter system in the following.

Watering a hanging herb garden can be challenging, especially when water drains from the pot’s holes. Several herbs can thrive in pots without drainage holes. If you ask me, the windowsill is the best place to set up an herb garden. My mom put a row of small cute herb pots on her windowsill to surprise them with natural sunlight. Some people like to make their indoor herb garden with one or two long planters on the windowsill, however, I prefer to use several small planters, like my mom.

I think caring for plants (especially repotting) in small pots is easier and I can match them easily with my indoor decor. What do you think? Let me tell you about my experiences:

  • ➡ For having a windowsill herb garden, make sure to choose herbs that need sunlight for their healthy growth.
  •  ➡ If you want to make your indoor herbal jungle inside a long planter, be sure to choose herbs with similar needs, especially similar watering requirements.
  •  ➡ I sometimes make my herb garden in recycled containers; you can also get creative by repurposing containers. Look at your kitchen, some things such as tin cans, teacups, or old coffee mugs can work as your herb planters. Make sure to provide drainage holes or choose herbs that can thrive in pots without holes.

If you have a blank wall in your house, Vertical gardens are the best ideas for an indoor herb garden. Although I’ve not ever performed it in my house, it can be a stylish and space-saving way to grow your herbs.

One of my friends made her wall-mounted herb garden using a vertical wooden plank and planters. You can also install a customized shelving system. There are numerous ideas for vertical indoor herb gardens and numerous variations in choosing planters and vertical planks which if you get creative, you can easily match with your indoor décor.

Kitchen Counter Herb Garden

Dedicating a section of the kitchen counter is my favourite idea for having an indoor herb garden. I spend lots of time in my kitchen and my indoor herb garden has made it a pleasant place and provides easy access to fresh herbs while I’m cooking.  My mom has a window in her kitchen with sufficient natural sunlight, so she put her indoor herb garden on the kitchen countertop by the window.

If you don’t have natural light in your kitchen like me, you can still have your indoor herb garden. How? Set up a grow light for under-cabinet herb gardens, it will work well. Use small pots or long planters.
