Hi, I’m a horticultural consultant and happy to share my experience with you. Today want to answer one of the frequent questions people often ask me: Is there an indoor hydrangea? Yes, indoor hydrangea, also known as “gift hydrangeas,” mostly belong to the species Hydrangea macrophylla, also known as bigleaf hydrangea, florist hydrangea, or hortensia.
A potted indoor hydrangea is very trendy, especially on “Mother’s Day”. If you have one of them as a gift from a friend or buying, you must know there are differences between indoor and outdoor hydrangea needs. In the following, I listed some facts about indoor hydrangea:
- This term is used primarily to indicate that this plant is intended to be enjoyed indoors for the duration of its bloom.
- “Indoor hydrangeas” are developed by plant breeders specifically for this gift plant market, with an eye toward their suitability to greenhouse production, quality, disease-resistant foliage, and of course, unique and colorful blooms.
- Because these hydrangeas are intended to be enjoyed indoors, little if any consideration is given to their outdoor or long-term performance.
- The indoor hydrangeas were not developed with outdoor performance in mind.
- A large number of them are not very cold tolerant and will die in winter in areas colder than USDA zone 7 or 8
- However, potted hydrangeas sold as houseplants will have been produced in greenhouses and fed to encourage them to flower early, so they will need time to adjust to life outdoors before being planted out.
I hope these tips are helpful for you, please ask me if you have any questions in the comments
